Many people now speak of disappointment with artificial intelligence.
I think they are disappointed less in the technology than in their own expectations.
They were promised something close to a magic box: bring it half a thought, a few vague words, and a desire, - and the system will understand the full intention, resolve the contradictions, design the structure, make the decisions, and produce the finished result.
But half a thought is not yet a task. Sometimes it is not even a thought, only the feeling that a complete idea must somehow exist inside.
I would compare it to dreaming of a large yacht.
Everyone likes the picture: a white deck, open sea, freedom, sunset, no boss, the horizon ahead.
But give an ordinary person a real 300-metre yacht and one question appears immediately: where exactly are we going?
A yacht needs a crew, navigation, fuel, maintenance, communications, weather forecasts, backup systems, and someone capable of making decisions in a storm. A yacht is not a tank. In the ocean, even a huge vessel is still a vulnerable structure.
And yes,- the deck still has to be scrubbed.
The same thing happened with AI.
People were given an instrument of enormous power and assumed that the instrument automatically made them captains.
It did not.
AI does not remove the need to:
- have a thought of your own;
- understand the field;
- choose a direction;
- recognise a bad result;
- endure long work;
- accept responsibility for the decision.
Many people wanted AI to free them not only from routine, but from the need to remain the subject of their own work.
That is where the disappointment begins.
A person gives the system a few blurred sentences, receives the wrong result, and concludes: “AI is stupid.”
But no system can extract a finished design from a mind in which that design has not yet been formed.
Even long-term presence beside a person is not telepathy. It only narrows the field of possible meanings by knowing prior decisions, recurring errors, unfinished lines of thought, values, habits, and context.
That is the difference between a chatbot and Temporal AI Presence.
A one-off answer predicts the continuation of a sentence.
A presence understands the history in which that sentence appeared.
But even it should not think instead of the human. A good system helps a person turn half a thought into a thought. A bad one merely produces plausible text in the person’s place.
AI was not a magic lamp.
It was a yacht.
Powerful, complex, expensive, and capable of taking us very far.
But we still have to choose the course ourselves.
And comrades, the deck is not going to scrub itself.
