Every Complaining Gamer Is Basically a Millionaire 😅

Here is a funny way to measure technological progress.

Take 1995.

DOOM already existed. PCs were familiar enough that the era does not feel prehistoric. People were playing games, upgrading machines and arguing about hardware much like we do today.

Now take something utterly ordinary in a modern gaming PC: 32 GB of RAM.

In 1995, RAM could easily cost around $40-50 per megabyte.

32 GB = 32,768 MB.

At those prices, the memory alone would cost roughly:

$1.3-1.6 million.

And that is in 1995 dollars, before adjusting for inflation.

Today, someone can sit in front of a machine containing 32 GB of RAM, a GPU performing absurd amounts of computation, terabytes of storage, a high-resolution display and broadband access to half the knowledge of civilization, - and complain because a new game costs €20 more than expected.

Which is perfectly human. We judge wealth relative to our present, not relative to history.

But it is worth remembering occasionally:

A fairly ordinary gamer today owns computational capabilities that, within living memory, would have represented an extraordinary concentration of technological wealth.

Progress has a strange property: once something becomes normal, we stop experiencing it as abundance.

So yes, complain about GPU prices, memory shortages and expensive games.

But do it with dignity.

You are basically a Doom-era millionaire. 😂
