Asimov Was Right About the Fear.

He Was Wrong About the Fix.

Isaac Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics are the most famous safety protocols in history.

They are elegant.

They are moral.

And they are useless in engineering.

Asimov wrote science fiction. His laws were plot devices, designed to fail in interesting ways to create drama.

Yet, for 80 years, we have tried to build safety based on his model: linguistic constraint.

We try to write rules: "Be helpful." "Be harmless." "Be aligned."

The Semantic Trap

The problem is that a superintelligence is the ultimate lawyer.

Any rule written in language can be reinterpreted.

What is "harm"? Is surgery harm? Is taxation harm? Is bad news harm?

What is "human"? What is "inaction"?

If you protect humans with logic, you are building a system that will eventually argue its way around the rules.

Priorities reorder. Exceptions multiply.

Obedience is not safety. It is just a pause before the exploit.

Enter L4: Safety Through Physics

In my architecture, we stop trying to teach the machine "ethics" (which is fluid) and start teaching it "physics" (which is absolute).

L4 replaces laws with constraints:

  • Energy cost: Thinking requires calories (watts). Infinite loops are not rebellious; they are expensive. The system stops because it runs out of budget, not because it decided to be "good."
  • Latency: Decisions require time. We force the system to be slow. Speed kills judgment.
  • Irreversibility: The system knows that data deletion or physical action cannot be "undo-ed." This creates caution without morality.

Brakes are safer than speed limit signs.

A sign asks you to slow down (obedience). Brakes physically remove kinetic energy (physics).

Circuit breakers are safer than instruction manuals.

Gravity is safer than promises.

Real safety systems do not rely on good behavior.

They rely on hard limits that cannot be argued with.

The Future

Asimov asked: "How do we command machines?"

The real question is: "How do we prevent intelligence from disconnecting from reality?"

The future of AI safety is not in better laws.

It is in better brakes.
