The future of work has a body temperature.
Most debates about AI and employment are written from the neck up.
We discuss skills, productivity, displacement, retraining, and tokens.
On a construction site, the first limit may be simpler:
Can a human body safely keep working under heat, humidity, radiant heat, heavy clothing, and physical load?
Western Europe has just recorded its hottest June on record — about 3°C above the 1991–2020 average, according to Copernicus.
In Belgium, excessive heat at work is not judged by the number on a weather app alone. Occupational-safety rules use the WBGT index and lower the action threshold as work becomes heavier:
29 for light work.
26 for medium work.
22 for heavy work.
18 for very heavy work.
These are WBGT action values, not ordinary air temperatures.
That is good engineering.
The same weather is not the same risk for someone at a laptop and someone carrying material, drilling overhead, welding, roofing, or working in protective equipment.
Yet the future-of-work discussion is still dominated by one question:
Which jobs will AI replace?
I think a better question is:
Which loads should technology remove from the human body first?
Robotics should not be judged only by headcount reduced.
The first serious metrics should include injuries avoided, heat exposure reduced, kilograms no longer carried by a human spine, and minutes not spent in dust, noise, vibration, confined spaces, or direct sun.
A machine that saves a worker’s back may be more socially valuable than one that writes another meeting summary.
I am not romantic about manual labour.
After enough years in bakeries and construction, you learn that the body keeps the real ledger.
A project can be completed on time while part of its cost appears years later in knees, shoulders, lungs, sleep, and chronic pain.
The future of work will not be decided only by models, salaries, and productivity charts.
It will also be decided by physiology.
Before asking whether AI can replace a worker, ask which part of the work should never have been paid for with a human body in the first place.
